The Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center is accepting new students of all ages on Oct. 3 in the Saturday morning T'ai Chi Ch'uan class from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. with instructor Sharon Chang at the SCV Senior Center, 22900 Market Street.

The cost is $30 per month per person. Those interested are welcome to come by the class before October 3 to observe, but preregistration is not necessary. Loose clothing and flat shoes are recommended.

Since T'ai Chi requires little to no equipment for participation, and can be practiced by almost any one of any age, it is one of the most cost-effective forms of exercise in existence. It is performed in slow motion combining repetitive body movements, breathing techniques, and elements of meditation that result in improved circulation, central nervous system functions like coordination and balance, improved metabolic function, increased mental focus, and greater relaxation abilities. These improvements have been scientifically measured in as little as 12 weeks of T'ai Chi Ch'uan practice, as well as documented for long-term T'ai Chi practitioners.

Research has shown that T'ai Chi can help deal with a host of ills that include arthritis, high blood pressure, stress, and poor balance. For example, a collaboration between Australian and Korean scientists has shown that osteoarthritis patients who performed T'ai Chi exercises for 12 weeks experienced 35 percent less pain, 29 percent less stiffness, and 29 percent improvement in the ability to perform daily tasks.
