Look for the good

My wife's grandmother, Grandma Ann, lived a long and happy life because she always "looked for the good" in every situation.

Today (Aug. 31), I felt like I had Grandma Ann sitting next to me, reminding me to look for the good ... and I didn't have to look very far.

Our son's 1969 VW bus broke down at the corner of Stevenson Ranch Parkway and Poe Parkway when the temperature was hotter than 100. I left work to go help him with the car, calling AAA to tow the bus.

Shortly after I arrived, a white SUV pulled over and a thoughtful mom popped out and gave us Gatorade and ice, saying that she had driven by a short while earlier and thought we might need something to keep us cool in the heat.

She even apologized for not having an ice chest to keep the drinks cold while we waited.

A random act of kindness that we greatly appreciated.

While we were parked at the side of the road, I noticed green and yellow balloons over by Deputy Jake Kuredjian's memorial and realized that today was the eighth anniversary of his death. It's hard to believe time passes so quickly.

I realized a broken down car by the side of the road is one of life's little inconveniences, something we allow to stress us, when in fact we have so many things to be thankful for.

A caring neighbor who unselfishly thinks of others and makes a small gesture.

Our law enforcement heroes who we take for granted until we're reminded that they sometimes make the ultimate sacrifice in service to our community.

I must admit that the best part of my day began when the bus broke down. Thank you, Grandma Ann - message received, loud and clear.
