Santa Clarita-based singer/songwriter and musician Vince Falzone is throwing a CD and book release party noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at Vincenzo's Pizza in Newhall.

The $10 per person admission includes pizza.

Falzone and his band -- for this gig including including professional violinist David Ewart, speed-metal guitarist Bob Spears (of Distorted Fate), world music percussionist and CalArts grad Laura Bilodeau, 13-year-old bassist Kyle Danzie and more -- will showcase songs from "Strip of Leather," Falzone's ninth and latest solo album, now available for purchase and download.

Falzone wrote, performed and produced the 11 "Strip of Leather" songs in 2006-2007, collaborating on some tunes with songwriter Alan Hare and recording with Ewart, Spears and Bilodeau plus bassist Allan Christen, percussionist/instructor Rolando Soto, rock drummer Mike Spencer, and vocalist Dave Tranter.

Saturday's event will also include a preview of the new rock memoir "Backstage with Bryan Rooney: From Liverpool to Ringo to Donna Summer," a first-person account of the Englishman's three-decade career in the music business, including time as a roadie in the 1960s with The Beatles and other Brish Invasion legends, having Ringo Starr as the best man at his wedding, and working for Donna Summer in the 1980s.

Based on video and audio interviews Falzone conducted with Rooney starting in 2005, the book was in its initial round of revision when Rooney died in 2007. Falzone finished the book in Rooney's honor, and a portion of proceeds from the project will go to Rooney's surviving family.

"For me, ("Strip of Leather") is full of emotion, starting with ‘When I Wake Up,' which I wrote after getting over a fever," Falzone said. "'Be Free' is dedicated to the passing of my father, my Uncle Craig and good friend Bryan Rooney. I wrote ‘The Flood Within' while waiting at the hospital for the birth of our son, Craig.

"We rock it with ‘Strip of Leather,' which for me is about the process of being a musician," Falzone continued. "'Overdrive' is about muscle cars and ‘Kick it' is a soccer-rocker. ‘Home is Where You Are' was cowritten with David Ewart. Finally, ‘I Believe' and ‘Because of You' round out the spiritual aspect of the album."

In "Backstage with Bryan Rooney: From Liverpool to Ringo to Donna Summer," Rooney serves as the reader's personal guide through the highs and lows of the music business as he experienced it in the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s.

Rooney grew up in Liverpool when The Beatles were just getting popular playing at local pubs. He became one of the world's first rock roadies by chance. His is a fascinating first-hand account of life on and off the road - and all around the world - with artists and bands such as Procol Harum, The Beatles, Harry Nilsson, Keith Moon, Donna Summer, and more.

Rooney recalls concert riots in the Frisian Islands and Milan; walking through the hallways of John Lennon's Tittenhurst Park estate; being pulled over by cops in Malibu while riding in an Excalibur with a drunken Keith Moon, who was wearing a Nazi uniform; the wedding with Ringo as best-man; and flying across the Atlantic on the Concorde with an order of sausage for Lennon.

Rooney eventually settled in the Los Angeles area and retired from the music business in the late '80s to be a stay-at-home dad. Falzone met him in 2005 and the two conducted numerous interviews, the transcripts of which form the basis of the book.
