An alleged local gang member is set to go before a judge Sept. 17, arrested after he reportedly ignored a deputy's orders and tried to hide a stolen, loaded handgun before surrendering.

Gerardo Vargas, 18, of Canyon Country and another man were reportedly walking towards a group of suspected gang members near the Rainbow Market at 26970 Rainbow Glen Dr. on Aug. 31 when a deputy saw Vargas holding something inside his waistband.

When the deputy ordered Vargas and the other man to stop, the one reportedly complied but Vargas kept walking toward the Rainbow Market.

Again, the deputy ordered Vargas to stop, and as the teenager walked into the market the deputy could see he was holding a gun, according to a sheriff's report.

The deputy followed Vargas into the market, weapon drawn and giving Vargas orders, the report stated.

At one point, Gerardo reportedly dropped the magazine of the handgun to the floor, and wrapped the gun in a cloth, trying to hide it near a store display, all while the deputy was holding him at gunpoint.

Vargas reportedly surrendered and was arrested, and the gun was found to be stolen.

Vargas was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station on felony charges of possession of a deadly weapon with the intent to commit a felony, carrying a concealed firearm, carrying a stolen firearm, exhibiting a weapon to a peace officer and receiving stolen property.

He is being held at the North County Correctional Facility in lieu of $35,000 bail, and is scheduled to appear in Newhall Municipal Court Sept. 17.
