Every year, coaches are tasked with finding the best way to utilize the talent on the their teams.

For Hart first-year junior varsity head coach Greg Sisneros, that process begins with developing leadership and unity.

"The team is beginning to come together cohesively," said Sisneros, who was the defensive coordinator for the team last season. "That's what we stress. It's not a team of individual players. It is a team working together in a concerted effort as one."

Quarterbacks Cory Mayes and Jeff Waterman have been competing for the starting job since early in camp.

Sisneros, who has spent eight total years with the program, said that Waterman "might have the edge in arm strength," while Mayes is "quicker in his scramble."

Whoever wins the starting job - Sisneros said the decision could come on gameday - he will have running back Dylan Edwards beside him, with standouts like Wyatt Smith, Robert Ence and Mike Park on the line for protection.

Ben McKeon, Anthony Arriarian and Rhett Almond all enter the season as slot receivers.

Almond will also handle the team's kicking duties.

Meanwhile, safeties McKeon and Arriarian will lend their services to the defensive side of the ball as well.

Their efforts will be aided by starting middle linebacker Connor Belina.

"He's the leader of the defense," said Sisneros of Belina. "He is very quick. What he lacks in size, he has in quickness and heart."

It is a model that the head coach extends to the rest of the team.

"We are a little bit short in size compared to other teams, so we are going to have rely on technique and quickness," he said.

And in the process, Sisneros hopes that his players will develop on and off the field.

"All the coaching staff, we stress that all of them are leaders on the team," he said. "Sure, there are going to be those that stand out above others, but we try and stress all-around leadership by every player."
