JV will just reload

Talent pool is strong enough to win another league title

Fresh off a Foothill League title last season, the Canyon junior varsity football team has enough talent to contend for another championship this fall.

“It’s an awesome group of kids,” said junior varsity head coach Scott Arnold. “They played really well last year.”

Like the varsity team, the JV squad will throw the football frequently with dual-threat quarterback Shareef Singletary, who is also dangerous on the ground.

Canyon displayed its proficiency in the passing game earlier in the summer when the Cowboys won the JV title at Saugus’ Under the Lights passing tournament.

“Those things are always good,” Arnold said. “I think it helps prepare you, just getting the competition and getting out there and playing. I think they’re important but I wouldn’t overvalue them. It’s more important to get ready for the season.”

Other offensive standouts for Canyon include lineman Alex Vaughan, running back Max Archuleta and wide receiver Andre Beets.

“I think we had a great summer and hopefully we’ll build off of that,” said Arnold, who also coaches the offensive line on the varsity team. “Our linemen won the JV competition at Canyon.”

Linebackers Felipe Herrera and Daniel Lee will lead the defense along with safety Sean Guzman.

Singletary might also see time as a defensive back, but the coaching staff has limited his snaps on defense since he became the quarterback.

“(Our style is) just hard-nosed,” Arnold said. “Get your guys the ball. I think these guys like to hit. They don’t mind getting their noses dirty a little bit.”

If Canyon does that, it might just win the league again.

“We have a really talented group returning,” Arnold said.
