Get mad

Gary Horton, in his column of Aug. 19 ("Fear shouldn't be a pre-existing condition"), has seemingly forgotten that government does not provide health care, police protection or public education. Government merely takes people's money and offers a portion of it to doctors, police officers and teachers to provide the services.

In so doing, the government has taken away our ability to spend our own money as we wish.

Why is it that many, like myself, assign my Medicare benefits to a private HMO?

After researching the private health plans, I found they offer much more health coverage than Medicare at no additional cost.
Why is there a thriving private security industry?

Could it be that government-run police cannot control crime?

Why do most politicians, industrialists and many, many public school teachers send their kids to private schools?

Why is there a rush to charter schools?

Could it be that our public schools educate less than a quarter of our high school kids to college entrance standards?

And oh, yes, I love my Social Security check.

If I had kept the mandated withholding and invested as I wanted, I'd have a superior income.

Note also, that Social Security has no money.

It is a stack of IOUs.

It is in big trouble. Another example of a government program.

Yes, I'm mad that Mr. Horton and his ilk want benefits at my expense. I'm mad because my anger has been portrayed as irrational and even Nazi-like. I'm mad that we are bequeathing a monstrous debt to our children.

I'm mad because it has taken so long for the electorate to get mad.
