District eyes two sites for Castaic high

Hasley/Sloan property considered again along with new area known as Green Valley Ranch

William S. Hart Union High School District officials said Tuesday they had identified two sites for a high school in Castaic.

After a nearly decade-long search to find a Castaic site for a high school, the district is again considering the Hasley/Sloan property, located in Hasley Canyon at the corner of Hasley Canyon Road and Sloan Canyon.

Another potential site is located in the proposed residential development known as Green Valley Ranch. This site is located along Del Valle Road approximately one-half mile from the intersection of Hasley Canyon Road.

The Santa Clarita Valley Facilities Foundation has owned the Hasley/Sloan site since 2002, said Rob Gapper, chief operations officer for the William S. Hart Union High School District. The foundation purchases land for Hart district school construction.

"Hasley/Sloan has always been a school site that we have considered viable," Gapper said. "And we own it."

The Hart district had previously knocked the Hasley/Sloan site off the list after neighbors complained.

The Hart district is considering the Green Valley Ranch location given its proximity to the Sterling-Gateway site.

Earlier this year, the Hart district selected the Sterling-Gateway site near the Valencia Commerce Center. But a deed restriction forbidding the construction of a high school and an outcry from business owners forced the Hart district to scratch the Sterling-Gateway site off the list.

"We recognize that there likely will be opposition with any site we select," Gapper said.

In November 2008, local voters passed Measure SA, a $300 million bond, with a top priority to build a high school in Castaic.

High school students living in Castaic now attend West Ranch and Valencia high schools, which are overcrowded.

The Hart district has commissioned traffic studies for both the Hasley/Sloan and Green Valley Ranch sites, and engineers have begun analyzing traffic flow and potential traffic control requirements for each.

An environmental study also has been commissioned on the Green Valley Ranch site.

An environmental study already has been done on the Hasley/Sloan site but will be reviewed by the district's consultants and updated as needed.

The district has contacted a civil engineering company to examine both properties to determine the usable acreage as well as the shape of the building pad.

Civil engineers will study the topography of each of the proposed sites to determine grading requirements and site development costs for utilities and other improvements.

Gapper anticipates the studies will be done by the first of December.

From there, the sites will come before the district's growth committee and, ultimately, board members for consideration.
