Golden Valley freshman team head coach Mike Edwards did not beat around the bush.

When it comes to his team, “the potential is mind-boggling.”

The Grizzlies hope he’s right.

“I feel like this will be the class that really helps turn the program,” he said, noting the talent at the junior varsity level as well. “We have some really, really special athletes that are freshmen right now.”

And it starts with running back Daniel Jeon.

“He’s a burner and he’s a leader, absolutely a leader,” Edwards said.

Similar praise is given to quarterback Deante Smith.

“He’s really coming along,” Edwards said. “He’s learning how to step out into a leadership role as well. He’ll be fun to watch for four years.”

Aside from Jeon out of the backfield, Smith will have wide receivers Darrian Moore and Isaiah Bernard as well as fullback Chris Hamilton as weapons.

Moore and Bernard will also play defensive back, while Hamilton will be a linebacker.

“Our skill guys are our strength,” Edwards said. “If we can get our o-line up to snuff, we’ll be a force.”

Jamal Lucian and Chris Jacques, to whom Edwards gave high praise, will anchor the Grizzlies’ lines on both sides of the ball.

“Our d-line is going to be solid,” Edwards said. “Our core of linemen on both sides of the ball are going to be good.”

He also noted that the secondary is rounding into shape and has a lot of “raw talent,” as do the linebackers.

“We have a lot of options at linebacker. We just need to work on our aggression,” Edwards said.

What makes these athletes so special?

According to Edwards, it is their eagerness to learn the fundamentals, extreme intelligence and work ethic.

“Football is just blocking and tackling,” Edwards said. “If we do those things well, our athletes will take care of the rest on talent alone. I really feel like this class is special and that this is the one that breaks through.”
