School bus MIA

I am appalled at the lack of concern our school district (the Wm. S. Hart Union High School District) seems to have for the safety of our junior high and high school students regarding transportation to and from school.

My grandchild is relegated to taking public transportation to junior high which, in itself, would not be that bad.

However, she has to walk just under a mile in the morning to the bus stop and getting home appears to be a bit "iffier."

After crossing busy Soledad Canyon Road she was the third child at the stop and arrived at approximately 2:20 p.m.

The bus was due at 2:35 p.m. A bus finally arrived at 3:03 p.m. and was so full that only a few of the children were able to get on.

Fortunately, or unfortunately as the case may be, her mother was parked at Blockbuster to make sure the trip went as planned, so after close to one hour of waiting for a bus in the sweltering heat, she drove her home in the car.

This was a one-time trip since, like so many parents in Santa Clarita, both she and her husband work and she was able to get off early today only to "shadow" the bus.

Who knows when, or if, she would have been able to actually get on a bus?

What can we do to get school bus transportation for these children? Seventh grade is 11- and 12-year-olds.

There is no adult supervision from the school at the bus stop which opens the possibility of disaster for these children.

They should never have to stand on a busy road waiting for a bus they can finally fit in.

This is only one bus stop for one school in the entire Santa Clarita Valley. Is this scenario status quo, better than most, or a "what in the heck happened here?"
