Whitney Durtschi

Whitney Durtschi, daughter of Diane Packer of Valencia and Grant Durtschi of Driggs, Idaho, will travel to Cuecna, Ecuador Sept. 3 to spend 10 weeks volunteering in orphanages. Durtschi graduated in 2008 from William S. Hart High School in Newhall and currently attends Brigham Young University.

Durtschi will travel with other volunteers through Orphanage Support Services Organization, a nonprofit charitable organization that sends volunteers on a regular basis to help in local orphanages in both Cuenca and Quito, Ecuador, two of the country's largest cities. The program began sending volunteers, mostly college-age, in May 1999.

Durtschi has learned to care for children through babysitting neighbors, friends from church, and her nieces and nephews. She has also had the opportunity to interact with individuals with disabilities through working at special events, and having someone very close to her who has disabilities. In addition, Durstschi has also volunteered in soup kitchens, visited retirement homes, and taken food to members of her church. She has also served in many leadership capacities within her church.
