HandsOn Santa Clarita in partnership with the city of Santa Clarita will host "Make a Difference Day" Saturday, Oct. 24.

Make A Difference Day was founded 18 years ago by USA Weekend Magazine and has today become one of the largest national volunteer days. In 2008 more than three million volunteers participated nationwide, accomplishing thousands of projects.

Volunteers will meet at Westfield Valencia Town Center at 8 a.m. on Oct. 24 for a kick-off breakfast and food drive, and are asked to bring a non-perishable food item which will be collected to benefit the "Help The Children" organization.

Over the last eight years, Make A Difference Day volunteers in the Santa Clarita Valley have been both revitalizing neighborhoods and improving the health of our community by enhancing access to quality health services, providing meals to the homeless, supporting seniors, improving educational opportunities and school facilities for children, and creating great community partnerships.

It has engaged more than 4,000 people, hosted between 40-50 volunteer projects each year and contributed more than 20,000 hours of service to the SCV, not only saving our community millions of dollars but also empowering volunteers to Make A Difference and be the change.

Last year more than 1,100 volunteers and sponsors completed 37 projects in 43 locations, benefiting numerous organizations and schools across the valley.

The types of projects accomplished in 2008 included:
* Building, playground, garden and school beautification
* Landscaping
* Food bank assistance
* Homeless shelter assistance
* General public awareness
* Light construction work
* Painting
* Horse stable beautification
* Reorganizing

The goal for this year's Make A Difference Day is to exceed 50 projects in the SCV.

This year's presenting sponsor is Boston Scientific, whose generous contribution will ensure a successful Make A Difference Day in 2009. Other sponsors include Aquafine, Bristol Farms, Citadel, Donaldson Filtration Solutions, Princess Cruises and ITT.
