A man shot his ex-wife and then himself in Valencia on Monday night, gravely wounding himself and leaving her injured but in stable condition, sheriff's deputies said.

The man, identified Tuesday by L.A. County Coroner's officials as Herbert Nieto, 79, died hours after the shooting, which occurred about 7 p.m. Monday in a condominium complex in the 23800 block of Del Monte Drive.
Nieto fired several shots inside a condo, then went outside and shot himself in the head, said Lt. Tom Bryski of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station.

"It was loud. Very loud," said Pam Fulton, who lives in a nearby unit. "I heard her yelling, 'Help me! Help me! Please, somebody help me!' That's what scared me."

Fulton said she heard three shots fired, then another two shots fired moments later.

Bryski said the victim, whose name was not released, suffered wounds to her arm and buttocks. Deputies located the victim in a condo where neighbors had taken her to protect her and provide aid.

Nieto shot himself in the head, Bryski said. When deputies arrived at the scene, Nieto was lying in the parking lot bleeding from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, with a gun lying on the pavement next to him, according to a statement from Lt. Brenda Cambra of the SCV Sheriff's Station late Monday night.

Nieto and the woman were rushed to a local hospital, where he died. She was undergoing medical treatment as of mid-afternoon Tuesday.

"This appears to be a domestic-related shooting as the parties are divorced," Lt. Cambra said in the statement.
