The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Posse patrols the SCV's back hills on horseback and helps sheriff's deputies with search-and-rescue calls from here to Malibu. Posse members are fixtures in the SCV's Fourth of July parade, and on Labor Day weekend they'll be trotting along Zuma Beach. The mostly civilian group, founded in 1986, is almost all-volunteer. Sworn deputies in the group earn just $1 a year. Each of its 22 members has a horse, a horse trailer and a truck, and must cover their own costs, which can reach up to $10,000 annually.
