More than 1,500 students ages five to 20 years old converged on College of the Canyons for the first "Discovering Careers-2008," a hands-on career exploration event featuring exhibitors representing a broad spectrum of technical career fields.

The students attended the April 26 event to find out what people do in a multitude of careers, and businesses did not disappoint them.

Tying into the hands-on format of the event, businesses brought trucks, welding gear, gymnastics sets, robots, computers, cameras and lots of stimulating interactive exhibits that kids could see in operation. There were also professionals discussing sales, entrepreneurship, fashion, finance, health and government.

Students had questions, and table sponsors provided the answers.

"By the end of the event, everyone had a bag of goodies and a lot to think about," event chair Ron Rudzinski said in a statement. "Students will be returning to school and talking about this for some time."

Valencia High School Principal Paul Priesz, chair of the School & Business Alliance, said that the event exceeded all his expectations.

"The parents were delighted to see so many businesses helping their kids plan their careers and the kids had a wonderful time," Priesz said.

Rudzinski anticipates that many more companies will want to participate next year and many of the students will want to come back and bring their friends.

"Clearly that's a sign of a successful event," he said.

Discovering Careers 2008 was sponsored by the SCV School & Business Alliance, the William. S. Hart Union High School District, all local elementary school districts and business volunteers from more than 40 companies.
