Santa Clarita Valley in top five L.A.-area hotel markets

The Santa Clarita Valley ranked among the top five hotel markets in the Los Angeles region for June 2009 with an average occupancy rate of 76.24 percent for the month.

The ranking came by way according to the latest Trends report by PKF Consulting, a leading research group and consulting firm specializing in the tourism and hospitality fields. 

The SCV's numbers were just slightly below Pasadena's, which posted an average occupancy of 76.95 percent for the month, but ahead of top destination locations in the region, including downtown Los Angeles, which posted an occupancy rate of 63.22 poercent; West Hollywood, which enjoyed an average 70.64 percent occupancy rate; and Long Beach Beverly Hills at occupying securing which posted 73.95 percent of their available space.

Historically June is a strong month for the Santa Clarita Valley as it is the height of the summer travel season, the area's strongest leisure travel period. However, like so many summer travel destinations, the economy has decreased vacation travel, with occupancy in the Santa Clarita Valley proving much weaker in early 2009 than previous years.

The valley's highly successful successes of June ranking can be can be attributed to numerous factors, including not only to the area's landmark attraction -- Six Flags Magic Mountain, which debuted the new Terminator Salvation The Ride in May -- but also because the city of Santa Claritra served as host of the Western States Police & Fire Games from June 13-20.

Attracting more than 6,000 visitors from around the U.S., the games were also a large contributing factor to June's successful tourism numbers. The games attracted more than 6,000 visitors from around the United States.

Additionally, the Antelope Valley's Lancaster Soccer Center hosted national games at their Antelope Valley facility that month, resulting in overflow at area Santa Clarita hotels from vacation-seeking families.

"June was a great month for the Santa Clarita Valley's tourism industry," said Frank Ferry, mayor of Santa Clarita. "We have been working hard to attract premier sporting events to our community to not only heighten awareness about Santa Clarita as an ideal sporting destination, but also to help our tourism businesses by developing new tourism markets. Sports tourism is a big part of Santa Clarita's future and it was a key reason for our area's soaring hotel market performance in June."

When numbers become available, July should be another strong summer month for the Santa Clarita Valley in terms of hotel occupancy, as visitors continued to enjoy Six Flags Magic Mountain and Hurricane Harbor.

In addition, the city also hosted the Southern California Swimming Junior Olympics event at its Aquatics Center, bringing thousands of competitors and their families to the area for several days.

Sports tourism remains an important focus for the city of Santa Clarita. for several reasons, including the direct economic benefit local businesses receive from visitor dollars, as well as the positive name recognition Santa Clarita receives enjoys from by being its associationed with these premier events. 

The city of Santa Clarita will continues to work with local, state and national agencies to encourage sporting events, both small and large, to call Santa Clarita home and in turn contribute to our maintain higher hotel occupancy levels.
