Denise Davis, a former middle- and grade-school teacher, takes on the role of principal at Castaic Elementary School.

After 24 years of teaching and administrative work, Denise Davis has taken over the reins as principal at Castaic Elementary School.

Davis succeeds Mark Evans, who was promoted to director of fiscal services for the Castaic Union School District.

Davis, a former middle- and grade-school teacher, has been waiting for the opportunity to lead a school.

"I didn't give up and was patient. I've been in the district since 1994, so I was well prepared," she said.

Superintendent James Gibson said he knew she had what it takes.

"Denise had been a serious candidate for principal at Castaic Middle School, so when the opportunity arose at the elementary school we knew she would be a great fit," he said.

Davis said she wants to continue the district's efforts to promote growth.

"I want to continue with the goals that the other leaders before me have set," she said. "Going green is something we have been working on, and currently the students are planting gardens on campus."

"ExCEL is an educational program we are running, which is an intervention program for reading comprehension," Davis said.

Davis said she believes one of the biggest changes she can make for the school is through her personality.

"As a leader, you can effect change. I'm going to bring in change through energy, passion and school spirit," she said.

"The teachers at Castaic Elementary were thrilled that she was promoted," Gibson said. "She is quite a favorite among them, and she has the administration's support."
