Sheriff's detectives arrested a man suspected of killing his 18-year-old girlfriend in her Canyon Country home Sunday night.

Detectives arrested a "distraught" Edwin Ortiz, 22, on suspicion of strangling Bowman High School student Guadalupe Chaman, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Dave Coleman.

About 10 p.m. on Sunday, Ortiz flagged down a California Highway Patrol car and told officers his girlfriend was dead, he said.

"He hasn't admitted that he's done it," Coleman said. "He was distraught at the time when he contacted the CHP. Then, in the course of the investigation, investigators believe he is responsible for the murder."
