Saugus High School graduate Shannon Sirk was awarded a Ph.D. in Molecular and Medical Pharmacology from the University of California, Los Angeles on June 11. Recognized as a National Merit Scholar while at Saugus High, she graduated as the number one student in her class in 1997 and entered Occidental College on a Presidential Scholarship.

Sirk completed her bachelor's degree in biology at Occidental in 2001. She was first employed in a research laboratory at City of Hope while in her senior year at Occidental. Prior to beginning her graduate studies, she worked at Children's Hospital, Los Angeles as well as the Jet Propulsion Laboratories in Pasadena.

Sirk is the daughter of Steve and Elizabeth Sirk, long-time Saugus residents, as well as sister to Plum Canyon Elementary School teacher Stephanie Cruz (SHS 1995), and brother's Steven (SHS 2007) and Sean Sirk (SHS 2012).

Sirk's post-doctorate work will focus on engineering new biopharmaceuticals for targeted cancer imaging and therapy.

She is currently preparing for interviews for post-doctoral training positions at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla and at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
