A man and a woman were arrested Friday in Newhall after the man allegedly shot one of his friends, then fled in an SUV with the woman and her three children, sheriff’s deputies said.

Cesar Madrigal, 26, of Canyon Country, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the shooting, which left the victim with non-life-threatening injuries.

Yvonne Gutierrez, 28, of Canyon Country, was also arrested on suspicion of driving the getaway vehicle.

Gutierrez’s three children were taken into protective custody, sheriff’s officials said in a statement.

About noon, Madrigal went to a friend’s apartment unit in the 16400 block of Palomino Place in Canyon Country and demanded money.

When the friend refused, Madrigal pulled out a handgun, shot him and took his money before fleeing in a black Cadillac Escalade, the statement said.

About 15 minutes later, deputies pulled over a black Escalade on southbound state Route 14 near Newhall Avenue. Gutierrez was driving, the statement said.

In the SUV, deputies found the woman’s three children, along with Madrigal, who was lying back in a reclining seat. The stolen cash and the gun were also in the vehicle, the statement said.

The victim was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital and was expected to survive, sheriff’s officials said.
