Saugus Union School District has named Cynthia Kirk, a kindergarten teacher at Tesoro del Valle Elementary School, the district’s 2009-10 teacher of the year.

“I was very humbled by it. I don’t feel that I am a great teacher; I’m just very aware of the surroundings and see how things can constantly improve,” Kirk said.

Saugus Union administrators unanimously selected Kirk, who has been teaching at the district since 1995, for the annual award.

Tesoro del Valle Principal Mary Post has taken notice of Kirk’s dedication to teaching.

“Watching her teach is an exciting an inspiring experience in itself. As I try to complete an observation, I find myself wanting to put down my pen and just watch her in action,” Post said.

“She is a representative of the high-quality, dedicated teaching community.”

Outside of teaching, Kirk oversees the school’s extracurricular programs, serving as the site coordinator for the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program.

Kirk has also presented at many educational conferences, works with summer school intervention programs and is a published author. She has co-authored “Empower Primary and Inspire Change” and “The Scholar in Me.”

Kirk, a former Saugus Union student, has had positive as well as negative experiences in school, and both have inspired her to flourish as a teacher.

“If you want to impact children and inspire them, you become a teacher. I want to inspire the future,” Kirk said.
