Burning a hole through our cake with spending

Sylvia Acuna thinks everyone should get what Congress gets in the way of health care ("All Americans need health care," Opinion, July 16).

That sounds dandy, doesn't it?

In fact, it sounds so dandy, I will go her one further: All Americans should receive the salaries Congress gets ... and the cars, staff, benefits and pensions.

Heck, as long as we're wishing on candles that are burning a hole through our cake and spending on the most massive credit card in history (to be paid by our kids and grandkids), why not go all the way?

The truth is, if any American wants health insurance, he should buy it himself - on his own dime, not on his neighbor's dime - or his kids' or his grandkids' dimes.

It's the same thing we do with food, clothing, housing, transportation, all other forms of insurance and everything else in life.

In short, it's the honest and fair way to live - but it means we'll have to stop making wishes and open our eyes instead.
