Hart High's baseball team defeated Canyon at Bud Murray field 10-2 on Wednesday.

Indians starting pitcher Michael Montgomery, despite having what he called a "sporadic" game, allowed three hits, walked five, allowed one earned run and struck out 12.

He struck out the side in the second inning with just nine pitches.

"I wish I could do that every inning," Montgomery said. "That's what happens when you execute your pitches."

The Indians broke the game open in the third inning taking advantage of Canyon fielding miscues. Hart scored five runs in the frame.

But the Cowboys (6-16-1, 1-11) kicked off their offense earlier with senior Zach Cossairt driving in Canyon's first run with a single.

The Cowboys would not score again until Ryan Low's sixth-inning RBI single.

But the Indians' offense was relentless as Hart had 14 hits in the game.

Hart's offense got off to a slow start, but in the third inning Spencer Moniz drove in a run with a single to center to tie the game 1-1.

"We have a very well-rounded team," Moniz said. "Once we got the base runners on, things started happening."

One batter later, Hart capitalized on Canyon's first error.

A Danny Susdorf single to center drove in Hart's second run.

He went 2-for-3, with one run scored and an RBI.

Devin Rodriguez then drove Moniz home with a sacrifice fly.

With two outs and Hart leading 3-1, Hart catcher Bryan Lucas doubled. Lucas took third base on an error by Canyon's right fielder allowing Susdorf to score.

The senior catcher then scored a run on a passed ball and Hart led 5-1.

Hart scored back-to-back runs in the bottom of the fifth with Lucas and Matern both hitting singles to center.

Lucas was 3-for-4 and had two RBIs on the day, while Matern was 1-for-4 and added two RBIs.

Hart scored three more in the sixth with pinch hitter Garrett Bailey's double to center driving in two runs followed by Lucas' double to center bringing in the Indians' final run of the game.

Bailey had two RBIs on the game, while Moniz and Rodriguez each had one.

Relief pitcher Ben Nicewicz came in in the seventh and would retire the final three Canyon hitters.

"We have gelled more as a team," Lucas said. " We just have to continue to play better."

The Indians improve their record to 17-6 overall and 11-1 in the Foothill League.

Hart will face Canyon again Friday followed by two games against West Ranch.

Should the Indians get two wins, they will clinch the league title for the first time since 2001.

"We are taking it one team at a time at this point," Montgomery said. "We control our own destiny. We have to stay fired up, we know these teams will be out to get us."
