Cinco de Mayo fest planned in Val Verde
A Cinco de Mayo celebration will be held in Val Verde 2-5 p.m. Saturday, at Val Verde Park. The festivities will include a live mariachi band, a taco truck, kids activities, and more, hosted by the Val Verde branch of the Boys and Girls Club and the Val Verde community. Val Verde Park is located at 30300 Arlington Drive.

Singer contest entries due today
Today at 5 p.m. is the deadline for residents to submit their entry to be considered to sing the National Anthem at the 31st annual Santa Clarita Dodger Day on June 7. Those applying  must live in the Santa Clarita Valley and submit a VHS, 8mm video tape or DVD of themselves singing the National Anthem. Submissions should not be recorded or edited in a recording studio. recorded auditions must be received at City Hall, 23920 Valencia Blvd.

Vehicle strikes Newhall pedestrian
A Newhall man was injured after a vehicle struck him as he was crossing Sierra Highway at Whispering Leaves Way on Wednesday. Shortly before 7 a.m., Blanca Ayala, 54, of Palmdale, was driving northbound in the number one lane of Sierra Highway when she hit Charlie Wang, 76, of Newhall. According to witnesses, who spoke with Detective John Maag of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station, Wang was crossing Sierra Highway in a marked crosswalk. Ayala allegedly did not stop for a red light. Wang, was transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. The extent of his injuries was not available.
