VAN NUYS - Wildcats Cody Howard and Allen Sarkissian combined to four-hit Agoura and West Ranch capitalized on seven Charger errors to win the Valley Invitational Baseball League championship 7-1 Friday at Birmingham High.

The VIBL title is the first in the program's history.

Senior-to-be Howard pitched four strong innings, giving up only one hit, no earned runs and striking out two before handing the ball to Sarkissian to start the fifth inning.

But it was a key 6-4-3 double play with runners on first and third that ended the second inning and sparked a stretch where the two pitchers sat down 12 batters in row.

"Both pitchers could be really confident that they could go after some hitters and drop it in there and have that ball in play," said West Ranch head coach Casey Burrill. "I thought our defense played fantastic and it has all summer long."

West Ranch broke the scoring drought in the fourth inning when left fielder Nico Rusconi hit a slow chopper to third base that was mishandled, allowing Chris Caldwell to score.

The Wildcats made it 2-0 when second baseman Jared Ortiz knocked home shortstop Randy Poe.

But West Ranch really opened up the floodgates in the bottom of the sixth, capitalizing on four Agoura errors to the tune of five runs, started by Poe's wild play at the plate.

Caught in a rundown, he scrambled up and down the baseline before Agoura dropped the ball in the batters box and Poe dove for home.

Overthrows and mishandled grounders led to four more Wildcat runs, stretching the lead to 7-0 going into the seventh.

After allowing three hits and one earned run, Sarkissian settled down and struck out the final two batters to end the game.
