Explorers with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station returned victorious this week from a grueling competition against their counterparts in other departments.

Nine of the station's Explorers took first-place honors in a tug-of-war contest and a "drunk relay," in which the Explorers spin around until they're dizzy and then race.

They also took second place in a stretcher relay, in which they race while carrying one of their teammates on a stretcher, said sheriff's Deputy Laurie Baylis, who accompanied them on the trip to the Camp Superstars Competition in Lake Arrowhead.

The competition, organized by the Whittier Police Department, drew about 150 young contenders from law enforcement agencies across Southern California.

"It's a real teamwork thing," Baylis said. "The kids did phenomenally well."
