Walters needs to address real issues

Dear Dan Walters:

I found your June 30 commentary in The Signal on cutting prison costs a bit disingenuous ("Costly prisons a good place for overhaul," Opinion, from the Sacramento Bee).

I am a little surprised you are picking on the paltry $10 billion Department of Corrections budget, when nearly two-thirds of state expenditures lie in two areas: K-12 education ($50 billion) and Health and Human Services ($39 billion).

Please refresh my memory: Did the governor add the extra $14 billion he promised for health care for all California's children, including the children of illegal aliens?

Why are you not addressing the terrible burden illegal immigration is placing on California's taxpayers?

Why are illegal aliens the "sacred cows" of the state budget?

Corrections costs are high because uninvited illegal alien criminals are clogging our courts and being adjudicated and sent to prison where they belong. Why cannot you state this?

The waste in K-12 education is astounding. Ask me, I know! I am a teacher. I see it.

C'mon Dan Walters, tell the truth!
