Circuses host abused animals

I'm sure most people have noticed advertisements and commercials with what appears to be happy elephants and tigers in who perform in circuses, put on by Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, among others.

Most people have no idea what those animals have endured to be coaxed into behaving and performing in that circus.

When not performing, the elephants are kept chained in place, and the tigers are confined in small boxcars or semi-trailers, pacing back and forth in their small caged environment.

Some never see the light of day until it's "showtime!"

The "training" of the elephants consists of being beaten and being prodded with steel hooks into their flesh, until they "learn" what is expected of them.

Do you wonder why an elephant occasionally gets angry and tries to lash out to their handler?

These magnificent animals are meant to be free or allowed to roam in large areas instead spend their lives in chains, day after day, year after year.

How can people who go to circuses with these animals in the show enjoy the performances when they know the animals are forced by cruelty to perform?

Please consider not attending circuses where these tormented animals "entertain" us.

There are circuses where such tortured animals are not being used.

If a circus comes to the Santa Clarita Valley, we can contact the circus officials and tell them the United States doesn't need this inhumane treatment of animals to enjoy a circus.

If you cannot find a circus without animals, consider another activity if you like animals.

There's always the zoo, Sea World, San Diego Wild Animal Park and many more.

Think about it: You take your children to a circus featuring abused animals and your child will grow up never even thinking of the fact that those animals are tortured into their performances.

So, join me to "just say no" to cruelty. It's the least you can do.
