More than 1,200 swimmers swarmed the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center on Wednesday for the start of the Southern California Junior Olympics swim meet.

The event, hosted by the Canyons Aquatic Club, runs through Sunday.

Each day, as many as 700 swimmers between the ages of 15 and 20 years old will compete.

"The Junior Olympics is the culmination of the summer swim season," said Ron Mita, president of Canyons Aquatic Club.  "The swimmers competing this week are some of the best in Southern California and the country,"

Some of the swimmers have a chance to advance to more prestigious Junior Olympic competitions, and a small number of the swimmers competing may make it to the Olympic trials, Mita said.

Making it to a competition of this level is a tribute to the athletes and an honor for the parents, he said.

"I think the parents are honored to see their kids make it this far," Mita said. "There's a lot of training and dedication by the kids and that excites the parents."
