Athletes will be gauged Saturday

It's pretty difficult to gauge how good of an athlete you truly are.

Your parents might tell you one thing, your coaches another thing.

One local training facility, in partnership with Nike, will tell you how good of an athlete you truly are.

On Saturday morning, Velocity Sports Performance - a brand new sports training center located on 25461 Rye Canyon Road in Santa Clarita - will host the Nike SPARQ Training 2008 My Better Championship.

Athletes, ages 13 to 18, will be tested in five categories - the 30-meter dash, vertical jump, medicine ball toss, compass test (an agility test where athletes will run to and touch cones) and a hurdle jump.

All of these events will take place beginning at 9 a.m.

Velocity Sports Santa Clarita owner Brad Beale said he anticipates testing to go until around noon.

Based off of all the events, athletes will receive a score.

The score will be entered into the Nike SPARQ database.

The top 10 boys and girls from around the country will later be flown to Nike headquarters, according to Beale, and will compete to determine the nation's top youth athlete.

"You've got to start somewhere to compare yourself to other top athletes," Beale said of the testing.

The partnership between Nike and Velocity comes from, Beale said, the shoe and apparel company's embracing of performance training.

SPARQ is being advertised in print and in television frequently with professional athletes such as Ladanian Tomlinson and Adrian Peterson being used to market it.

SPARQ stands for speed, power, agility, reaction and quickness.

Nike has partnered with Velocity to use it as a venue.

Velocity itself has 65 locations across the country with Santa Clarita being its newest.

The company has another location in Redondo Beach, which Beale also owns.

He said recent NFL draft picks Keith Rivers, Brian Brohm, Chad Henne and John David Booty trained at the Redondo Beach location.
