Marriage is about love, not hate

On July 18, my wife and I were victims of a hate crime in the Vons parking lot on Lyons.

We have a "Yes on 8" sticker on the back of our van which we were approaching with our groceries when I noticed three young men "hanging out" not far from our vehicle.

I didn't pay any attention to them as we loaded our bags into the van. But when we began to get in the front seats my wife said, "We need to get away from here before I have to listen to any more of that."

I hadn't heard anything but when I began to listen I could barely hear, "I hate straight people" chanted quietly behind us. Then I realized they had been speaking quietly so my wife would hear them on her side of the van.

In their own childish way they were criticizing our support of heterosexual marriage, or, as we knew it when we got married, holy matrimony.

By this time, my wife was driving away and the boys were yelling "A**holes!" louder and louder.

I suggested she swing around and I would speak to them. She said something about my blood pressure and kept going. I would like to answer those boys here and perhaps their parents, too.

I would like to introduce them to my wife, Susan, who I have loved since high school.

We have kept the vows and covenants we made when we were joined "in holy matrimony" more than 40 years ago.

It is a tremendous strength to me to have been faithful to her all these years and to abide in our mutual support.

When she was diagnosed with breast cancer I was able to demonstrate how much I loved her.

When I had my cancer treatment she did the same for me.

We have four children and nine grandchildren.

Without them we would not have learned a depth of love that transcends the individual.

Our love extends to each of these wonderful creatures and to the ones who came before us.

Marriage is building love between people and between generations. It is not about hate, it is about the children.
