The California Highway Patrol reported vehicle thefts have seen declines for three consecutive years, amounting to the largest decrease in more than a decade.

The agency said in a statement there has been a 12.2 percent decrease state-wide, though the thefts still cause an economic loss of more than $1 billion.

The bulk of the 199,766 thefts occurred in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties. And the vast majority of the vehicles were recovered, the statement said.

CHP officials encouraged motorists to park in well-lit and populated areas, not leave cars running unattended, and consider a car alarm or immobilizing device.
