Save our smog?

In response to Brian Baker's July 13 letter ("Climate change hysteria") and Bob Comer's July 14 letter ("Global warming scam"):

Wake up and smell the carbon!

It is no secret that the Earth's climate is in a constant state of change.

There are natural peaks and valleys in temperature throughout our geological history. Nobody will debate that ... not even Al Gore.

My issue is this: people will turn a blind eye to their own actions and target us "Gore-istas" for bringing up the fact, and I mean fact, that this most recent warming of the Earth has a direct correlation with the actions of we humans. There is no way to debate around it.

We pump, on average, 20 tons of carbon dioxide per person into our atmosphere each year. The results are staggering. Many species have gone extinct and our ice caps are melting at an alarming rate.

The truth is the truth. We humans are killing this planet as fast as we can. It is time to stop thinking about the global warming debate as an issue of politics. We are all humans and this is our only home.

Look at all the tail pipes and smoke stacks. In the many millions of years that the climate has been changing back and forth there has never been so much deliberate pollution.

Sure, there will always be volcanoes emitting pollution into the atmosphere. Nobody will debate that either. However, a volcano does not have the capacity to think about what it is doing.

We humans, on the other hand, do. Those of us who choose to use this amazing tool will realize our actions are harming this planet.

Those of us who do not will continue to make irresponsible decisions and doom the planet for good.

If you'd like an easy-to-understand example of our impact, look to the giant hamburger patty of a smog cloud that dominates Los Angeles.
