Washington, D.C. - House Armed Services Committee Ranking Member Howard P. "Buck" McKeon (R-CA) Monday praised the announcement by the Secretary of Defense that the U.S. Army will be temporarily expanded by up to 22,000 soldiers:

"House Armed Services Committee Republicans support and stand ready to work with the Army's civilian and military leadership to grow the size of the Army by up to 22,000 soldiers. This growth is necessary to ensure that deploying units are manned at levels congruent with the needs of our military.

"In addition, our troops, and their families, have carried the heavy burden of fighting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. By increasing the size of the Army, the strain of multiple deployments should be lessened over time," McKeon said.

"Our committee has been a leader in increasing the size of both the Army and Marine Corps. We look forward to working with the leadership at the Department of Defense to find additional money to pay for this increase so it doesn't negatively impact other programs and initiatives that are under way."
