City of Santa Clarita Mayor Pro-Tem Laurene Weste is the recipient of the "Government Leadership Award" for the San Fernando Valley Business Journal's 2009 Women in Business Awards.

Weste was honored at the Business Journal's Eighth Annual Women in Business Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, July 15.

The Women in Business Awards honor outstanding achievements made by local business women. The 2009 award categories included Business Owner of the Year, Rising Star, Trailblazer, Manager of the Year and many others.

The Government Leadership Award was presented to Weste for "serving constituents with a vigor and wisdom," according to the San Fernando Valley Business Journal.

Mayor Pro-Tem Weste came to elected representative government after a long career in business, and served as an original member of the city's Parks Commission in 1988.

Weste has served two one-year terms as Mayor and will fill the post again in January. Weste focuses much of her time and energy as a City Council member on environmental preservation and protecting and enhancing the quality of life for community senior citizens.

Weste cites the establishment of numerous parks, the preservation of thousands of acres of open space, and the construction of a cross-town trail system among her proudest accomplishments.

For the future, Mayor Pro-Tem Weste expects to work for more open space and Santa Clara River preservation, the creation of new sports fields and roadways, the revitalization of Old Town Newhall and the establishment of an open space greenbelt completely surrounding the city.
