Newhall School District board member Bob Jensen said Friday he hopes to bring his financial background to the William S. Hart Union High School District board.

“We’re in a financial crisis and that directly and significantly impacts the schools,” Jensen said. “I just feel that there needs to be strong financial leadership on the board.”

If elected, Jensen hopes to bring his 18 years of experience as a certified public accountant to the board.

Jensen works at the same firm as Dennis King, a current Hart board member who will not be seeking re-election on Nov. 3.

Along with addressing the budget crisis, Jensen considers constructing a high school in Castaic a top priority.

“That needs to be thoroughly looked into and resolved,” he said.

Jensen views public education as a strong aspect of building a community.

“When you have good public education, it’s going to help the economics of that community and it’s going to provide opportunities for kids,” Jensen said.

“When public education is strong, you’re going to have families moving in and families are going to help bring jobs and enhance business.”

Jensen, a Valencia resident, is finishing his first four-year term on the Newhall School District.

“I think we’ve done a very good job the last four years in balancing the finances with our programs,” he said.

Jensen’s children, one in seventh grade and the other in 10th, attend Hart district schools.

“I want to be involved where they are,” he said. “I think it’s important at least one board member on the Hart board to have kids in the district.”

As a Hart district parent, Jensen said he understands the needs of the local community.

“My thoughts are not just for my own kids,” he said. “I know a lot of families throughout the Santa Clarita Valley and a lot of other kids that are the same age as my kids.”

Jensen is a member of Kiwanis International and has been involved locally with AYSO Soccer for a decade.

Jensen, who works in Burbank, also serves on the city of Burbank’s Treasurer’s Oversight Review Committee.

Jensen will be joined by Joe Messina, Suzan Solomon, incumbent Paul Strickland and Linda Valdes in the race for Hart board.
