Local residents interested in running for a school board seat in the November election are invited to a meeting Monday night where they can learn the ropes.

“Come to this meeting and we will tell you what it’s like,” promised Bruce Fortine, longtime member of the College of the Canyons Board of Trustees.

The program is organized by the Santa Clarita Valley Trustees Association and will provide an overview of the responsibilities of elementary, high school and community college board members, Fortine said.

The meeting will be led by Fortine; wife, Gloria Mercado-Fortine, who is a member of the William S. Hart Union High School District board; and Rose Diaz of the Saugus Union School District board.

“It’s a good chance to meet and greet,” Fortine said. “These people will be the people that you may or may not be working with for the next four years.”

Would-be school board members have until Aug. 7 to file their declarations of candidacy with the Los Angeles County Registrar for the Nov. 3 election.

If a declaration of candidacy for an incumbent is not filed by Aug. 7, candidates other than the incumbent can file a declaration of candidacy until Aug. 12.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Saugus Union School District’s office, 24930 Avenue Stanford in Valencia.
