As a fast-moving, 50-acre blaze in Castaic threatens homes, firefighters have asked some Castaic residents to evacuate.

Voluntary evacuations are in effect for residents south of Sloan Canyon Road and west of Parker Road, including Applewood, said Los Angeles County fire spokeswoman Stephanie English.

"We're asking folks in the areas that I've designated to take their horses and evacuate themselves if necessary," she said.

The blaze, which started about 2:45 p.m. near Sloan Canyon Road at Lake Hughes Road when a vehicle fire may have spread to brush, has charred at least 50 acres within an hour.
