Memo to Smyth

Assemblyman Cameron Smyth’s Web site expounds on his concern for California’s educational system.

Isn’t that a bit hypocritical when he consistently votes to cut education funding?

The schools have been taking it in the shorts for several years now and any further cuts will destroy an educational system that was once ranked among the best in the country.

Even more hypocritically, Smyth advocates cutting services for the indigent and physically impaired, and at the same time, he is entertaining Chamber of Commerce fat cats at $1,500 a plate “fundraising” dinners at Spataro’s Restaurant in Lancaster.

Cameron Smyth is working hard to prove that he is a good Bush Republican.

He would be better off working hard to be a good California Assemblyman.

Sending out e-mails like the one I recently received, in which he bragged about how he roadblocked passage of a budget, makes him look a bit dim-witted in view of the fact that the state is issuing IOUs to pay its bills.

California must fulfill its obligations to provide schools and public safety. It must fulfill its obligations to pay its bills.

If doing both requires borrowing or taxes to be raised on the people and corporations who benefit most from doing business in this state, then so be it.

Assemblyman Smyth, please stop grandstanding and do your job.
