Santa Clarita city officials are seeing green with the launch of their conservation-focused www.greensantaclarita.com.

The Web site launched recently after a year in development, spokeswoman Gail Ortiz said.

Focused on resources for residents, businesses and builders, the site was developed by the city’s technology, communications, environmental services and planning departments.

“The city really has done a lot in terms of protecting the environment, and that work needs to live someplace accessible,” Ortiz said.

The site includes conservation tips, links to green-related Web sites, updates on environmental legislation and a calendar of local events.

“We can continually update this. That makes this a better resource (than printed material),” Ortiz said.

Another upside, she said, was that the site was developed in-house without hiring expensive outside consultants or designers.

Ortiz said the site is being promoted through blogs and city publications being sent to community groups, including homeowner associations.

Developers of the Web site could find few other green-themed municipal sites from which to take cues, she said. With increased environmental focus, Ortiz expects that will change.

“I think you’ll see more in the future with the current White House administration pushing that agenda,” she said.
