A fire at a woodworking shop prompted authorities to shut down Sierra Highway near the College of the Canyons Canyon Country campus this afternoon.

The blaze broke out about 1 p.m. in a strip mall at 17223 W. Sierra Highway, said Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Mike Brown.

Firefighters doused the fire about a half hour later, but a few firefighters stayed behind to ensure it wouldn't spark back up.

Sheriff's deputies closed down the major road for hours after the incident.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
