Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley has selected local orthodontist Alan Barbakow as honoree for its 2009 Celebrity Tribute dinner.

The event is slated for Nov. 6 at the Odyssey, but sponsor letters and save-the-date cards to guests from past tributes will be going out this summer.

Zonta co-chairs for this year's event are Cathie Kincheloe, Peggy Edwards and Michele Mann.

Sponsorships range from $2,000 to $10,000, and include reserved tables at the dinner. Discounts are available for sponsors who commit to a sponsorship and pay before Aug. 1.

"Dr. Barbakow has made a significant difference in the lives of many Santa Clarita non-profits over the past 38 years," Kincheloe said. "Zonta is pleased to honor Dr. Barbakow for his dedication and substantial contributions to the commuity in which we live and work."

Barbakow currently serves as president of the Betty Ferguson Foundation, is past president of the Child & Family Development Center board, is a founding member of the Santa Clarita Arts Council and Foundation for Dental Health, and has been active in raising capital campaign funds for Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.

The Tribute dinner is a major fundraiser which supports Zonta's local and international programs to improve the status of women.

Local projects include Healthy Woman's Day, which offers free breast cancer and other health screenings for uninsured or underinsured women; LifeForward workshops to help at-risk women build self-sufficiency skills; and the Virginia Wrage Memorial Fund, which offers grants to mature women re-entering the workforce following a life trauma.
