Principal Bill Bolde describes her as extremely likable and a good student, but the one thing Lauren Blaire will always be remembered as is a fiery competitor on the Saugus High School softball team.

Blaire was 18 years old in 1998 when a drunk driver broadsided her car at the corner of Plum and Bouquet canyon roads, ending her life and her softball career just before her senior season was about to begin.

"Lauren was an outstanding catcher on the varsity softball team," Bolde said. "She never got to play her senior year."

The Saugus varsity softball team plays a game in Blaire's memory every year, and this year's Lauren Blaire Memorial Softball Game will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Hart PONY League complex in Valencia.

The Saugus Centurions will be playing the West Ranch Wildcats.

Although there is no charge to attend this contest, the Saugus softball program will be accepting donations from those who would like to support the Lauren Blaire Scholarship program, which awards a scholarship to a deserving Saugus softball player each year, Bolde said.

A ceremony will be held 15 minutes prior to game time Thursday to remember Blaire. For information, contact Saugus softball coach Julie Watson at jwatson@hartdistrict.org.
