City should not duck ducks issue

Regarding Gina Momary's Letter to the Editor, "Bridgeport still a deadly place for ducks" (Opinion, July 1), I, too, sat and ate my dinner at California Pizza Kitchen as I watched a family of geese get run over by cars last week.

I've been away at college, so I don't know what has happened in regards to this matter. However, all I've noticed is some "Duck Crossing" signs.

This is not only a concern about geese safety, but more importantly, human safety.

Last week, a woman got out of her car on Newhall Ranch Road to shoo the frightened geese off the road.

What if a car hit her? That would be extremely horrific.

Or, what if one car stopped and another ran into it?

I don't understand why the city has not done anything else to prevent the geese from crossing, to permanently move them or to control the population at all.

I simply Googled "ways to remove geese" and methods showed up.

One solution involves ordering some dead geese decoys to scare the birds off. Another method includes planting taller grasses so the geese can't see their surroundings and no longer feel safe.

Maybe putting up a fence would keep these lazy geese on one side or encourage them to fly across the street. There are many other methods, and I'm sure the city could hire a geese expert if they wanted help in this situation.

I'm not an expert, but something needs to be done.

The city approved both developments on each side of Newhall Ranch Road, including the man-made water that has attracted these geese. Therefore, the city has an ethical obligation to correct this situation.

The geese are simply doing what comes naturally to them - going from one source of water to another. Unfortunately, this means crossing a major city street.

Spending a little money to prevent the geese from crossing or safely removing them seems like a much smarter option than waiting for someone to get hurt or killed.
