Seventy-five pounds of pancake batter mix.

About 1,000 pancakes.

Seven cases of sausage.

A whole mess of eggs, gallons of orange juice and a band blasting out Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll.”

That was the Santa Clarita Valley Rotary Club’s recipe for success early Saturday morning as the group hosted its 44th annual pancake breakfast.

The breakfast has become a staple of Santa Clarita Valley Independence Day festivities, getting the day rolling before the annual Fourth of July parade through Newhall.

Rotary Club president Mike Thomas said he expected about 700 people to come through for breakfast, which costs $4 per person.

A makeshift cafeteria was set up in the parking lot of the Roger Dunn Golf Shop at the corner of Main and 5th streets.

While Rotary Club members worked the grills, and the aroma of hot pancakes and sizzling sausage filled the air, locals sat down at long tables and chowed down on breakfast on the mild July morning.
