Long way to equality

A letter I wrote regarding Proposition 8 ran in The Signal on June 23 ("Prop. 8 illegal").

I read all the responses that followed.

There is still so much controversy and misconception regarding same-sex marriage and homosexuals here in Santa Clarita.

I found the following excerpts from the "Human Relations Forum" page on the city of Santa Clarita's Web site at, subtitled "Everyone matters in Santa Clarita:"

Q: How did the Human Relations Forum begin?

A: In May 1994, members of the community addressed the Santa Clarita City Council requesting the formation of a task force to promote understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity in Santa Clarita.

Q: How does the Human Relations Forum achieve its goal?

A: The Forum works to promote positive human relations and acceptance of all people in every aspect of community life. Our goal is to make Santa Clarita a place where all people can live and work peacefully with a better understanding of each other and the value of diversity.

Mission Statement: The mission of the Santa Clarita Valley Human Relations Forum is to encourage, assist and empower our community to eliminate all forms of discrimination, and to promote understanding and appreciation of human differences."
It seems as a community we have a long way to go to accomplish these goals, but the least we can do is try.
