First Word
“The bulk of the expenses for your health care will fall to someone else, and who ever turns down a free ride." Bob Dickson, columnist

Today is Friday, July 3, the 184th day of 2009. There are 181 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:
On July 3, 1863, the three-day Civil War Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania ended in a major victory for the North as Confederate troops retreated.

Ten years ago: President Bill Clinton, acting to head off potential problems with the safety of imported food, said in his weekly radio address he was ordering inspectors at American ports to brand all unsafe and rejected food products, “Refused U.S.”

Watercooler Talk
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut woman’s close encounter with the mythical beast, Sasquatch or Big Foot, turned out to be nothing more than a boy in a costume. Fairfield police said a woman driving last Tuesday night called police to report that she “almost hit Sasquatch,” which was standing in the middle of the road.

She told police the hairy beast was 8 feet tall and had “legs like tree trunks.” It ran off after she switched her headlights to high beams.

Police said they searched and found a 16-year-old boy dressed in a gorilla-like costume. He told them he was standing at the intersection of Unquowa and Sturges roads, waving at passing cars while friends watched.

He was turned over to his parents.
