A memorial service for longtime Boys & Girls Club supporter Sheldon Allen is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at the organization's Sierra Vista Junior High club in Canyon Country.

A former Hart Union School District trustee and 1995 Santa Clarita Valley Man of the Year, Sheldon died July 6 after a long illness. A Canyon Country resident since 1967, Allen was 77.

Allen and his wife of 58 years, Pat, have served as devoted supporters of the Boys & Girls Club of the SCV. Sheldon Allen had long been a fixture at the club’s annual auction, for which he began volunteering in 1982.

In 2000, the couple were named “Volunteers of the Decade” by the board of the Boys & Girls Club of SCV.

Sheldon Allen was recently honored by the club with a national service award for his 20 years of volunteer service on the board, which he joined in 1985.

Anna Ott, president of the Boys & Girls Club of SCV Foundation, said she and Allen shared a connection beyond the Boys & Girls Club.

“I didn’t find out until years later that he went to San Fernando High School,” Ott said. “My husband and I also went to San Fernando, but different years.

“I always called him my ‘tiger’ because that was our school mascot,” Ott said. “I am going to miss him so, so much. He was such a huge supporter of the club, I don’t know what we would have done without him. He had a passion for the club.”

Allen was an enthusiastic volunteer for a variety of nonprofits and civic activities. Included among his many volunteer activities was a long stint (1967 to 1979) on the Canyon High School Booster Club.

He also served as a trustee for the William S. Hart Union School District from 1975 to 1978. His community service commitment continued to expand as he became a volunteer on the Red Cross Disaster Team in 1993, where he also served as board president.

Allen worked on the Celebrity Waiter Dinner Committee when it benefited the American Heart Association and continued as an event volunteer after it became a fundraiser for the SCV Committee on Aging.

He also was a volunteer for the city of Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival and played Santa Claus for the annual Rent-a-Santa Zonta Club of SCV fundraiser.

“He really enjoyed community service,” said Pat Allen. “That was our social outlet. We rarely went to a movie or anything because there was never time.”

In addition to his volunteer work Allen also enjoyed the athletic exploits of his six grandsons.

A long-time sports fan, Allen managed the Little League teams of his first two sons.

He died June 29.

Allen is survived by his widow, Pat, his children Sharon Miles, Vince Allen, Mitch Allen and Chris Allen and grandsons David Miles, Eric Miles, Christopher Miles, Brian Allen, Daniel Allen and Brandon Allen.

Allen was born in Los Angeles but grew up in San Fernando; he was a 1950 graduate of San Fernando High School.

He worked as an attorney with a practice in general law. His offices were located on Ventura Boulevard in the San Fernando Valley.

Pat and Sheldon Allen were married in 1951. The family moved to Canyon Country in December 1967.
