Save money on A.C.

Last summer, we were immediately able to save more than $150 a month in air-conditioning bills instantly and affordably.

We did two things to our house:

1. We added a whole-house or attic fan which cools the house in the evening;

2. We had our windows tinted with a mirror film like you see in some cars.

This made the biggest difference. On a day when the temperature is 102+ we don't even turn the air conditioning on until after 3 p.m. - if at all.

The house is nice and cool and we are not suffering in any way. When the thermostat says 79 or 80 degrees we may turn it on, but believe me it is well after 3 p.m.

There is only one minor downside. In the winter it is cool in the house. The sun does not warm the rooms like you are used to, but putting on a sweater is a small price to pay.

Lastly, a few years back I had a new roof installed that is a very light gray which made an immediate difference in how much air conditioning we used.

The tinted windows made the biggest difference, though, and I highly recommend you consider this.
