Santa Clarita Christian Year in Review: Glory on the Gridiron

Santa Clarita Christian’s 2008-09 sports season will be remembered most for the underdog fooball team that took home the CIF-Southern Section Division I 8-Man title.

The Cardinals upset Faith Baptist 50-28 in the title game to win the championship behind a dominant running game.

It was an impressive victory considering Faith Baptist was the defending champion and had beaten the Cardinals by 14 points during the regular season a little more than a month earlier.

The girls volleyball team was also successful, making the CIF-Southern Section Division V-AA semifinals and reaching No. 1 in the Division V-AA poll for a period of time.

Softball carried the spring sports for the Cardinals, also making the playoffs.

Led by the football team, Santa Clarita Christian experienced its fair share of success in the 2008-09 athletic year.

Sept. 11
Middle blocker Kaley Morrison leads the Cardinals girls volleyball team past Holy Martyrs of Encino 3-0 with 10 kills and seven digs in Santa Clarita Christian’s season opener.

Sept. 12
The Santa Clarita Christian football team jumps out to a 30-16 halftime lead en route to a season-opening 59-20 victory over Trona. Running back Collin Keoshian racks up 253 yards on the ground and scores five touchdowns.

Sept. 20
The Cardinals football team runs its record to 2-0 with a 54-32 victory over Joshua Springs of Yucca Valley.

Sept. 27
The Cardinals defense allows just 70 yards of total offense as the football team shuts out Cate 50-0. SCCS posts seven tackles for loss, three sacks, two safeties and two forced fumbles. Quarterback Steven Borden and running back Collin Keoshian combine for 253 yards and six touchdowns on the ground.

Oct. 1
The Santa Clarita Christian girls volleyball team reaches No. 1 in the CIF-Southern Section Division V-AA poll, while the football team reaches No. 3 in the CIF-Southern Section 8-Man football poll.

Oct. 2
Outside hitter Kristina Gibson has seven kills and seven aces to lead the Santa Clarita Christian girls volleyball team past Wildwood 3-0.

Oct. 4
Santa Clarita Christian remains unbeaten in football with a 41-6 win against Hesperia. Quarterback Steven Borden rushes for a pair of touchdowns and running back Collin Keoshian gains 162 yards rushing and two scores.

Oct. 9
The Cardinals girls volleyball team defeats defending Heritage League champion Faith Baptist 3-1 on the strength of middle blocker Kaley Morrison, who has 14 kills, seven blocks and four aces. Middle blocker Karla Eberlein adds 12 blocks, eight kills and four digs.

Oct. 11
Santa Clarita Christian’s football team improves to 5-0 with a 33-20 win over Rolling Hills. Running back Collin Keoshian rushes for 190 yards and quarterback Steven Borden adds 87 on the ground. Keoshian also throws a 28-yard touchdown pass to receiver Russell Gage.

Oct. 18
Thacher hangs the first loss on the Santa Clarita Christian football team, a 54-38 setback that sees the Cardinals commit five turnovers. Running back Collin Keoshian racks up 221 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.

Oct. 20
The Santa Clarita Christian girls volleyball team defeats Hillcrest Christian 3-1, with middle blocker Kaley Morrison recording 11 blocks and eight aces.

Oct. 25
The Cardinals football team blows out Los Angeles Lutheran 54-6 behind six touchdowns from running back Collin Keoshian, including a return for a touchdown on the opening kickoff.

Oct. 28
Twelve digs and 10 blocks from middle blocker Kaley Morrison are not enough for the Santa Clarita Christian girls volleyball team in a 3-1 loss to Faith Baptist, the Cardinals’ first loss in Heritage League play.

Nov. 1
The Cardinals football  team loses 46-32 against Faith Baptist, the top-ranked 8-man football team in the country. Santa Clarita Christian takes a lead into the third quarter, but Faith Baptist turns up its offense in the fourth behind quarterback Nick Wallin.

Nov. 3
The Santa Clarita Christian girls volleyball team rolls to a 3-0 win over Heritage League foe Los Angeles Lutheran thanks to outside hitter Kristina Gibson’s 13 aces and 10 kills. Middle blocker Kaley Morrison also tallies five kills.

Nov. 5
The Cardinals girls volleyball team misses out on a chance to win the outright Heritage League by squandering a two-game lead in a 3-2 loss to Milken Community. Middle blocker Kaley Morrison leads SCCS with 14 kills, six blocks and five aces.

Nov. 8
All-purpose back Colin Mayhugh carries nine times for a staggering 175 yards and four touchdowns as the Cardinals football team blasts past Hillcrest Christian 76-28 to finish the regular season 7-2 and 2-1 in the Heritage League.

Nov. 13
The Santa Clarita Christian girls volleyball team advances to the CIF-Southern Section Division V-AA quarterfinals with a 3-0 victory over Rolling Hills Prep.

Nov. 15
The Cardinals invoke the mercy rule in shutting down West Shores 53-0 in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division I 8-Man playoffs. The defense allows just 69 total yards and running back Collin Keoshian hauls in three touchdown passes.

Nov. 18
The Santa Clarita Christian girls volleyball team falls 3-0 to Coastal Christian in the CIF-Southern Section Division V-AA semifinals. It is the furthest the Cardinals have advanced since 2002.

Nov. 21
Running back Collin Keoshian leads the way for the Cardinals football team in a 28-21 win over Avalon in the CIF-Southern Section Division I 8-Man playoffs. Keoshian gains 242 yards on 26 carries and scores four touchdowns.

Nov. 29
The Santa Clarita Christian football team clinches a trip to the CIF-Southern Section Division I 8-Man championship game with a 26-21 win over Windward. Running back Collin Keoshian rushes for 119 yards and ices the game with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Steven Borden, who normally plays quarterback.

Dec. 5
The Cardinals football team upsets Faith Baptist 50-28 to win the CIF-Southern Section Division I 8-Man championship. Running back Collin Keoshian has 39 carries for 266 yards as Santa Clarita Christian trails only once, an 8-6 deficit in the first quarter. The Cardinals convert 11-of-14 third downs and run 68 plays as opposed to 39 by Faith Baptist.

Dec. 6
The Santa Clarita Christian girls soccer team upends Gabriel Mission 6-2 to capture third place in the Grace Brethren Tournament. Midfielder Amanda Doty scores three goals and forward Kayla Gale finds the back of the net twice.

Dec. 17
The Cardinals girls soccer team scores a 2-1 upset victory over Viewpoint, the No. 4 team in the CIF-Southern Section Division VI polls. Forward Kayla Gale scores the first goal and midfielder Amanda Doty adds the second.

Jan. 6
Forward Kayla Gale and midfielder Amanda Doty each record hat-tricks and midfielder Kaley Morrison adds two goals and three assists as the Cardinals girls soccer team beats Rolling Hills 9-2.

Jan. 15
The Cardinals boys basketball team comes up short in its Heritage League opener, a 55-48 loss to Milken Community. SCCS point guard Davion Cotterell scores 14 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter.

The Santa Clarita Christian girls basketball team drops its Heritage League opener in a 55-29 loss to Milken Community, which jumps out to a 24-4 lead after the first quarter. The Cardinals are held scoreless over the first five minutes of the game.

Jan. 22
Forward Kayla Gale records a hat-trick, and the Cardinals girls soccer team blows out Hillcrest Christian 5-0.

Feb. 18
The Santa Clarita Christian boys basketball team gets 31 points from point guard Davion Cotterell and defeats Twin Pines 72-53 in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division VIAA playoffs. It is the fourth time in five games that Cotterell tops 25 points.

Feb. 19
The season comes to an end for the Cardinals girls soccer team in a 4-3 overtime loss to Schurr in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division VI playoffs. Santa Clarita Christian goes ahead by two goals in the second half but can’t keep the lead.

Feb. 21
Capistrano Valley ends the Santa Clarita Christian boys basketball team’s season with a 51-36 victory in the CIF-Southern Section Division VIAA second round. Point guard Davion Cotterell carries the Cardinals offensively with 22 points.

March 11
The Cardinals softball team edges Oakwood 6-5 to win its Liberty League opener.

March 31
The Santa Clarita Christian baseball team falls to Milken Community 10-0 in its Liberty League opener.

April 20
Pitcher Carly Asher goes 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs and two stolen bases as the Santa Clarita Christian softball team defeats Oakwood 8-2. Infielder Kaitlyn Preheim also supplies three hits for the Cardinals along with four stolen bases.

The Santa Clarita Christian boys volleyball team defeats Hillcrest Christian 3-1 to earn a Heritage League victory.

April 22
Catcher Christine Kash picks up four hits and an RBI, but the Cardinals softball team falls to Faith Baptist 7-6.

April 28
The Cardinals baseball team wins its first Liberty League game by defeating Los Angeles Lutheran 13-3.

May 5
Pitcher Carly Asher strikes out 16 as the Santa Clarita Christian softball team beats Buckley 8-3. Asher also picks up three hits, two stolen bases and a run scored. Outfielder Brenna O’Neill and infielders Haley Heerdt and Kaitlyn Preheim all add multiple hits.

May 21
The Cardinals softball team falls to Grace Baptist 12-2 in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division VI playoffs. Grace Baptist breaks the game open with a four-run sixth inning.
